Abstract

It is well known that the performance of a machine tool is affected by the accuracy of the machine it self as well as its working accuracy.To check the accuracy of the machine tool on its own precision static acceptance tests have been standardized elsewhere.The working accuracy of the machine tool,i.e.the accuracy of the work it produces,is affected largely by the vibrations produces during the cutting operation.The most important of thee vibrations is the chatter.Chattr performance of a machine or stability of a cutting process on that machine,is assessed by one of the two;well established,techniques namely;
1-Actual cutting,and excitation tesing technique.However,excitation testing is considered to be the most recommended tool to assess a machine tool dynamic performance.The object of this work is to investigate clearly all factors affecting the assessment of machine tool dynamics using excitation testing as well as complementing the previously established procedure for dynamic acceptance tests(DAT).
In order to carry out this procedure there evelved a great need for an accurate and reliable test rig suitable for forced vibration testing of machine tools.
So,the electro-magnetic exciter was developed,the description of which ,including the basic design data,the method of calibration,and the experience obtained in actual use are mentioned in this work.
Using this rig a program is made for investigating the various factors affecting the dynamic performance of a horizontal milling machine,as an example also to show the wide range of cutting conditions which can be covered by this form of assessment from relatively few frequency response tests,and further to show the influence of the following on the dynamic performance of investigated milling machine from the point of repeatability of results.
