Abstract

The economical recovery of useful s~furic from waste streams has been of continuing conoern to industry for many years , but it has received greater emphasis recen¬tly due to the imposition of govern~ental regulations on waste discharges to decrease environmental pollution •
Sulfuric acid is used a catalyst , a component in chemical reactions , and to remove impurities from org~ anic materials • It is also used in pickling of steel and in the nmnufacture of t1tanilliu dioxide • After use , most of the adid is discharged as wasto or as a by~product contaminated with organic matter and diluted with water. Such wastes are commonly referred to as acid sludge ,
acid tar , spent or waste acid • In general those having high acid to hydrocarbon ratios and low viscosities can be treated more cheaply than those \dth low ratios and high viscosi ties , Rov/ever , trace irapuritiies can some”,,: times cause trouble by foaming and excessive cor=osion.
In disposal of industrial waste solutions of su’ . .:’ur¬ic acid , lime neutralization is the nost common treat¬ment • The resultant calcium sulfate sludge and other
reaction products constitute a major problem • An entir¬ely satisfactory solution of the disposal problem created
