Abstract

The resonance escape probability is one of the most important factors to be calculated in the aesign of nuclear reactors. It has a decisive influence on the criticality of reactor systems containing resonance absorbing elements such as U23829nd Th232 •
The present work gives a proposed method for calculating the resonance integral and the resonance escape probability for
single isolated resonances in a homogeneous mixture of a resonance absorber, moderator and an admixed moderator. In the proposed method, the intermediate character of the resonance , with respect to the absorber as well as with respect to both moderators, is taken into consideration. The method allows determining this intermediate character as a function of the
moderators’ scattering cross section per resonance absorber atom. For this purpose, a concept which we call the ],r-width is introduced~
An expression for determtning -r.bis TT -width is obtained by •
using the method of equating first and second iterative approxi-

mations of the resonance integral. An alternative procedure for determining an expression for this -rr -width, based on the stochastic nature of the resonance absorption phenomena, is also given.
The proposed method uses the rr -width concept for determining tha intermediate character for the resonance with respect to the mea era tor and the admixed moderator, however, we treat the intermediate character of the resonance with respect to tho
