Abstract In this thesis , the highly established theory of circular cylindrical Its has been used in the analysis of plate panels. This theory is similar to that of the classical plate theory for loads normal to and in the plane of plates. The difference is that , in the case of the shell theory, one governing equation is established combining the primary and secondary stress resultants. As a result , the two separate equations of the plate defining a certain boundary condition are reduced to a single one . Such an equation is known as the shell theory compatibility equation . Provided that a cylindrical surface is generated to a flat one , the shell theory may be applicable to the analysis of flat plates. The advantage in choosing the shell theory for the treatment of ship structures is that its governing equation of compatibility is much more responsive to solution with respect of prescribed boundary conditions than the two compatibility equations of the plate theory . |
