Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the absorption of sulphur dioxide gas, which is considered asl An air pollutant, in water using a Iaboratory absorption packed column . Roth of absorption packed column and the flow system are built in the laboratory . The water is distributed over the entire cross sectional area of the column through a distributer located in the upper section of the column, and the packing plays the role of transfer mediwn through which transfer of the sulphur dioxide mass from the gaseous phase to liquid phase takes place .The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter consists of introduction, definitions and tenns, units and concentrations, levels and limits .While the ~cond chapter conf;ists of theoretical part,l\bl\orpHon, hrief review ofthe principal design equations ”Chapter three is about the removal of sulphur ioxide and consists of the main sources of sulphur dioxide, methods of sulphur dioxide emission, ~ctions of sulphur dioxide in water and tissue fluids .Chapter four deals with the experinlental work, which consists of description of the nbsorption column, description of the experinlental set-up, method of running the experiments, sampling and analysis, variables studied.Chapt.er five contA.inll results and dillClLc:sionl\ and conllists of:- Effect ofiolet stream S02coocentration (from 0.7 to 900.8 pprn)on its percentage removal.2- Effect of liquid flow rate (from 0.08 to 0.55 Umin) on the percentage removal of S02 .3- Effect of changing the air flow rate (from 6 to 13.2 Umin) on the percentage removal of S02 . 4- Effect of chllOging the superficiol molar Ilir flow rote (from 3.5 x 10•J to 7.7 x 10-3 grnoll min . cm2) and molar liquid flow rate (from 6.27 x 10-2 to 43.11 x 10-2 Rmol/min.cm2) on Kaa, Noo,and ”00 .Throughout one hunderd experimental runs, it was found that in cases of low concenlrdlions of S02. inm slrellIU ( < 20 ppIU), Ule absUlplion of S02. WIIS 98.57 % , while in cases of high concentration stream ( 900.8 ppm ) , the percentage absorption was 63.63 . In the latter case, it is tec.omroended to ()8!!Y out this process on twe :;tages in order to reach 98 % absorption .
