Abstract GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICE (GPRS) IS A PACKET DATA SYSTEM THAT UPGRADES EXISTING NETWORKS. IT INTRODUCES THREE KEY FEATURES: ALWAYS ONLINE, A CONVENIEBT UPRADE WITH INSTANT COVERAGE, AND A ROAD MAP TO THE THIRD GENERATION 3G. GPRS IS A NEW CORE NETWORK ADDED TO THE GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATION (GSM) NETWORK MAKING IT ABLE TO CARRY WIRELESS PACKET DATA MORE EFFICIENTLY. IN THIS THESIS, MANY GPRS SYSTEM PARAMETERS SUCH AS BLOCKING PROBILITY, HANDOFF FAILURE PROBABILITY,TRANSIT DELAY AND THROUGHPUT ARE COMPUTED. DIFFERENT PROPOSED APPROACHES ARE ASSUMED TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF GPRS SYSTEM. THE PROPOSED APPROACHES ARE FIRSTLY ADAPTIVE OVERLAPPING BETWEEN ADJACENT CELLS, RE-SWITCHING BERWEEN ADJACENT AND OVERLAPPED CELLS. |
