Abstract

Our study aims to study the prevalence of amyloid deposition in synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis patients, level of serum amyloid A and their relation to disease activity and disease severity.
Conclusions:
Our results detected that Congo red staining (amyloid deposition) was positively correlated with both age, disease duration, age at onset, disease activity parameters and disease severity parameters but this correlation was not statistically significant.
The synovial fluid and synovium are considered to be the target organs in rheumatoid arthritis and the earliest site for the occurrence of inflammatory process which suggest inducing amyloid deposition much earlier than other tissues (fat, renal, rectal).
So that we recommend doing synovial fluid aspiration and Congo red staining in all rheumatoid arthritis patients with long disease duration, rheumatoid factor positivity and low RBC count.
