Abstract This thesis is entitled ”entrances of the religious and secular Ottoman buildings in Cairo (923 – 1265 A.H / 1517 – 1848 A.D)”. Entrance is the path or means that leads to the interior of any structure; also it is the first part a passer-by sees. Therefore, it forms in people an impression that lasts. As a result, it was important to talk about this architectural mass in details. Like all several parts of any structure; entrances had passed through different phases of development; mostly affected with the surrounding social circumstances. In the beginning; entrances were just simple openings void of any ornaments, their only purpose was to lead to the interior of buildings. In later times, entrances became more developed and complicated. Therefore, entrances appeared in a different form of protruding masses crested with several types of arches. Many shapes of stalactites and marble casings were also applied. |
