Abstract

The present study of abating mercury pollution was • based upon mercu=y removal by precipitation as mercury
sulfide and mercury recovery by solubilization as mer-
cury tetrachlor~de complex. The precipitation process
was studied both in laboratory and pilot plant. The parameters investigated were pH, sodium sulfide dosage, type and dose =f synthetic polyelectrolyte coagulant,
aeration, and c=mbination of aeration and coagulant addition. The pi:ot plant test was carried out on 600 1
composite wastewater samples to simulate the opti~um values arrived at in the laboratory.The composite 600 1
waste water samples were prepared from individual con- taminated effluent streams in proportions equivalent
to their average flow rates. In the solubilization pro- cess the effects of solution pH and dose of sodium
hypochlorite were investigated in the laboratory. Filt
rab~lity of the slurry after mercury solubilization was then studied. Different organic and inorganic coagu-
lants, at different concentrations, were added and the behavior upon f~ltration at different pH values under
vacuum was studied. A proposed method of treatment was described and a ~rocess flow sheet was included.
