Abstract
In a thesis devoted specifically to architectural and urban design, I am limiting myself to design-related problems, theories and solutions. At the beginning, the research give special emphasis to pedestrian spaces, their use and values, and historic precedents. The analysis that follow focuses on design theories, and considerations for implementing pedestrian projects. The recommendtions and application potentials are finally revealed.
The following issues are discussed in the research chapters respectively :
I - The decline of urban life in city centres and its aspects such as the loss of image and functions and the destruction of human scale. An introduction to pedestrian zoning sets forth this recent approach and its basic goals.
2- The use of pedestrian spaces and the variables involved: The human values concerning the pedestrian’s perception and behavior, and the considerations for diverse urban activities and types of users.
3- The lessons from history reviewed as a means of furthering our understanding of urban design theories and early experiences of traffic-free zoning.
4- Urban design considerations to redesign the urban public space and to achieve coordination with the larger spatial structure of urban centres.
5- The process of implementing pedestrian zones that comprises four stages planning and design, legislation and finance, implementation and maintenance, and community participation.
6- The recommendations and guideliens for the redevelopment of urban centres to better serve the people.
7- A case study of the Alexandria city centre, comprising a field survey and opinion polls, intended to assess the effects of the city’s first experiments of pedestrianization.
