Abstract Material handling equipment selection is a complex and difficult task which requires extensive technical knowledge. The objective of this research is to develop a material handling selection model using an expert system environment. Forklift truck is taken as an example to validate the proposed model. The work in this research involved three major activities: 1. Study the literature published in the field of materials handling equipment selection and expert systems. 2. The development of a model prototype. 3. The validation of the proposed model results. The proposed model main idea in brief: The design of the selection process utilizes twenty seven governing attributes which are based on the material handling equation. The use of this equation helps in analyzing the materials and the move requirements in order to select the appropriate material handling equipment. The proposed model finalizes the selection process by carrying out economic analysis in case that two or more forklift truck types are selected as the eligible equipment. The proposed model consists of five steps: 1. Selecting the appropriate equipment category based on answers provided by user for a series of questions in order to compare the basic equipment characteristics to those of the basic user requirements. 2. Selecting the appropriate equipment type based on answers provided by user for more specific questions concerning the material to be handled. List#1 of alternatives is the result of this step. |
