Abstract This thesis comprises phytochemical study of two compositous plants namely, Centaurea 1omerata Vahi and Chxyeanthemum coronarjum L Large number of plants belonging to both genera Cent aurea and chrysanthemum have been used in folk medicine as remedies for a variety of diseases such as fever, jaundice, rheumatism and cough (page 2 & 3). The genus Centaurea is represented in Egypt by 13 species.6 C.glomerata is indigenous to egypt, it is commonly known among Bedouin by the name “Sorret en— na’ga”. It belongs to the tribe Cynareae. The genus Centaurea is characterized by its content of cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones (31,32 & 42)• Previous phyto— chemical investigation of C.1omerat resulted in the identification of rutin, apigenin and luteolin 7— However the literature survey appears to lack information concerning the aesquiterpene lactone Content of Cg1omerata. Accordingly, it was of interest to carry out a phytochemical investigation of C. |
