Abstract

This study was carried out at Alexandria Main University Hospital on 45 paediatric patients of either sex, aged between five and ten years. ASA physical status classification І or ІІ. All children started the study and completed it successfully and were included in the subsequent statistical analysis. Patients were randomly categorized into one of three equal groups ,15 patients each. Atropine sulfate 0.01 mg.kg-1 was given immediately before induction.
All patients received 1.0 μg.kg-1 fentanyl. Group M patients received magnesium sulfate (40 mg.kg-1) in 50 ml saline given over 5 min at - 6.5 min and 1.0 ml saline at - 1.5 min (before induction). Group R patients received 50 ml saline over 5 min at - 6.5 min and rocuronium (0.05 mg.kg-1) in 1.0 ml saline at - 1.5 min (before induction). Group C patients received 50 ml saline over 5 min at - 6.5 min and 1.0 ml saline at - 1.5 min (before induction of anaesthesia).
Patients in all groups were preoxygenated for 3 min with 100% oxygen; anaesthesia was induced at zero time with propofol 2 mg.kg-1 followed by succinylcholine 1.5 mg.kg-1. Endotracheal intubation was done after the disappearance of the single twitch.
The aim of the present work was to compare the effects of magnesium sulfate versus rocuronium pretreatment on succinylcholine induced fasciculations, hyperkalemia and hemodynamic changes during induction of anaesthesia.
The results of our study showed that :
1- Demographic data :
There was no significant difference between the three groups as regards age. There was no significant difference between the three groups as regards sex. There was no significant difference between the three groups as regards the body weight.
2- Vital signs :
a. Mean arterial blood pressure :
It decreased insignificantly in group M at 1,5,10,15 and 20 min after induction of anaesthesia. In group R, it increased significantly at 1,5 and 10 min after induction, while there was no significant change 15 and 20 min after induction. In group C, it increased significantly at 1,5 and 10 min after induction, while there was no significant difference 15 and 20 min after induction.
Comparing the three groups, there was no significant difference before induction, 15 and 20 minutes after induction, while it was significantly lower in group M compared to the other two groups 1,5 and 10 minute.
