Abstract

Aim of the work
To review various aspects of memory as regards psychological, neurophysiological and clinical aspects of memory.
Conclusion
Memory can be defined as the retention of and ability to recall, information, personal experiences and procedures (skills and habits) as reported by Schacter (1996).
Memory can be classified by many ways, the most which can be assessed which applied by Kaplan and Sadock (1998).
- Immediate memory: (or short term memory) which defined as the reproduction, recognition or recall of perceived material within a period of up to 30 seconds after presentations.
- Recent memory: concerns events over the past few hours or days.
- Recent past memory: concerns the retention of information over the past few months.
- Remote memory: is the ability to remember events in the distal past.
About the anatomy of memory: the outlayer of the brain is the cortex, the deep folds of the cortex contain 70% of a person’s one hundred billion brain cells. These cells are responsible for the highest level of cognition, which include all thought and memory. With respect to body size, humans have a larger cortex than any animals.
Virtually every part of the brain contributes to memory. There is no single memory center, and there are many ways that information is learned and remembered.
Memory works in systems, usually involving multiple modalities simultaneously.
