Abstract

Aim of the work
1- To evaluate the efficiency and efficacy of intrathecal calcitonin as a post operative analgesic agent.
2- Also, if the endogenous opioid system involved as one of the mechanisms of its action?
Conclusion
Any method of post operative pain relief must meet three basic criteria: effectiveness (i.e. potency and timing), safety (i.e. the simplest non invasive route of administration) and feasibility.
A lot of studies support the concept of the use of calcitonin as an analgesic agent.
Also, this study showed that calcitonin can produce an excellent postoperative analgesia of rapid onset and long duration and one of its mechanisms of action is through the opioid system.
Recommendations
1- The future approaches should be directed towards new drugs that have less systematic side effects and long analgesic action.
2- The mechanisms of action of calcitonin need more studies and investigations.
3- Proper administration of antiemetic drugs before injection of calcitonin can reduce the incidence of vomiting and nausea which was the most common side effects faced us in our study.
