Abstract Aim of the work To evaluate the effect of premedication with (H2 antagonists) on the thermoregularity changes in patients undergoing abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. Conclusion We conclude that all patients under general anesthesia become hypothermic but the patients who were premedicated with famotidine were severely hypothermic than others who are not premedicated or premedicated ranitidine hydrochloride, so famotidine, but not other H2 antagonists, augments core hypothermia and decreases the vasoconstriction threshold by inhabiting thermoregularity pathway through a central mechanism. We recommended the use of all H2 antagonists except famotidine before induction of anesthesia as a pre medication to reduce the risk of aspiration without severe changes in thermoregularity system. |
