Abstract
One hundred and seventy five male rats (350±10 g,) were randomly divided into seven groups as following: Control group (A) was given i.p. normal saline (1 mL). Group (B) was oral infected with 3 × 1012 CFU of E. coli for each kg b. w. group (C) was given a single i.p dose (200 mg/kg body weight) of cyclophospamide CP on the first day of the experimental period. group (D) infected with E. coli and treated with Lactoferrin LF (0.5% in drinking water) 72 hours before E. coli infection for the duration of the experiment (21 days). Group (E) treated with CP and LF. Group (F) infected with E. coli and treated with Cp and LF. Group (G) administrated LF only. Blood samples were collected from five animals per each group at end of 1st, 2nd and 3rd week post treatment for hematological, biochemical and immunological parameters. Our results showed toxicity and damage of vital organ (liver, kidney and hart) and depression in the bon marrow cells in case of CP group and same picture in case of E. coli infected group but less sever bone marrow depression. The result concluded that LF can protect from E. coli infection in rats and can partially reconstitute humoral and cellular immune response in rats given a sub lethal dose of CP.
