Abstract

Chitin is an unbranched chain of polysaccharide with a composition of 1-4,βlinkage of N-acetyl-glucosamine.Chitin is an important constituent of the outer layer of many soil organisms such as arthropods exoskeleton, egg shells of Nematodes and the cell wall of some fungi.Chitin can be degraded by a variety of microorganisms; including fungi and bacteria which possess chitinase enzyme. Chitinolysis, namely hydrolysis of the glycosidic bonds of chitin by chitinases which is considered the most important pathway of chitin degradation in soil. Filamentous fungi and bacteria appeared to be the dominant degraders of chitin particles in soil.
