Abstract

from this study, we concluded that diabetes mellitus caused various hazardous effects on body tissues and organs including the submandibular salivary gland. It is a serious metabolic disease and has various complications that may affect patient’s life. It causes marked effects on the structure and function of the submandibular salivary gland leading to decreased saliva production. Dryness of mouth or xerostomia is considered one of the early manifestations of diabetes that leads to mucositis, rampant dental caries, infections of the mouth and pharynx as well as difficulty in swallowing, speech and taste. So, diabetic patients should receive their treatment appropriately to protect them from such complications and to improve quality of their life
