Abstract

The aim of the study was to estimate the levels of superoxidedismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as markers ofthe antioxidant capacity in epileptic children and to evaluate theeffect of the antiepileptic drugs on the oxidant-antioxidantmechanisms of the bodyEpilepsy is an important pediatric problem. Seizures is the mostcommon symptom encountered by the pediatric neurologist. However, the mechanisms of epileptogenesis are not wellestablished.
As the brain contains large amount of lipid in the myelin sheaths, and because of its high oxidative metabolism, it is considered as alogical target of free radicals damage. Thus, the membrane lipidperoxidation, which is due to increase in free radicals or decrease inthe activities of the antioxidant defense mechanisms, has beensuggested to be causally involved in some forms of epilepsies andalso to increase the recurrence of seizures. It has been suggestedthat part of the effectiveness of anticonvulsant drugs is due toinfluencing free radical generating systems.
Free radicals are not detected as such. Some free radicalsmediated reactions are relatively stable and serve as markers of lipidperoxidation, as malondialdehyde (MDA). Glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px ) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are the most importantmembers of antioxidant defence mechanisms. NO was found to playmany roles in CNS as a messenger molecule, however whengenerated in excess, it can be neurotoxic.
