Abstract In recent years, the world witnessed the emergence of the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia, which states that the disorder arises, at least in part from a fixed structural defect occuring early in prenatal life and interacting with maturational events. The subjects of this study were 60 (31 boys & 29 girls) healthy schizophrenic offspring, each child had one schizophrenic parent, compared with 21 (12 boys & 9 girls) healthy children as a control group, their parents had no history of any psychiatric or neurological disorder. All children were below 18 years. At the time of evaluation, none of the children in this study met diagnostic criteria for any psychiatric disorder or a neurologic disorder. The parents of all schizophrenic offspring were patients visiting El-Hadara University Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt in the period between (February 2000 - March 2001). |
