Abstract The present study was conducted on 42 patients with schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and bleeding esophageal varices. Patients were randomly classified into two equal groups of twenty one patients each. Patients in group A were operated upon by the distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) and those in group B by the small diameter partial portocaval shunt (SD-PPCS). Both groups were comparable regarding age, gender, history of hematemesis, liver and spleen size and pre-operative ascites. The age of patients ranged from 22 to 67 years with the peak at the fourth decade in both groups. Thirty five patients (83.3%) were males and five patients were females (16.7%). All patients had a history of hematemesis. The number of attacks ranged from one to five attacks. |
