Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Introduction included anatomy of the submandibular region and surgical management of submandibular gland demonstrating its complications, and the use of the harmonic scalpel. Then description of endoscopic neck surgery and its application in the submandibular region.
OBJECTIVES:
The present study aimed at evaluating the feasibility of submandibular sialadenectomy as regards mean operative time, operative technique, intraoperative blood loss, overall patient satisfaction (cosmetic results), postoperative pain, hospital stay and postoperative complications in cases of pure submandibular gland lesions not expected to have adhesions.
METHODS:
This study included 12 patients admitted to the department of surgery, Alexandria main university hospital for submandibular sialadenectomy between June 2007 to July 2008. Demographic data of the patient, operative technique, postoperative recovery, complications and results were prospectively recorded.
The harmonic scalpel and the special hand made lifting device were used. Patients were followed-up at 6 and 12 weeks after the operation for assessment of pain and their satisfaction.
RESULTS:
Video assisted submandibular sialadenectomy is feasible and safe procedure having no complications. All patients experienced very mild postoperative pain. Almost all patients showed full satisfaction with the cosmesis.
