Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the thermal performance of a hybrid solar cooker-dryer system in North Sinai prevailing weather conditions. To achieve this goal, we have designed and constructed two units which are flat-plate and multi-step absorber plates hybrid solar cooker-dryer system. The systems have been constructed using the locally available materials in Solar Energy Laboratory, Physics Department, Faculty of Education, Al-Arish branch, Suez Canal University and then tested experimentally. The thermal performance of the proposed solar cookers as a solar cooker was investigated experimentally in terms of the specific and characteristic boiling times, the utilization efficiency, the first and second figures of merit and cooking power experiments. from the results the proposed solar cookers could be used to cook all kinds of food in relatively short times and also for consecutive cooking on a sunny day. Furthermore, Kumar’s test procedure was applied to determine the design parameters and then, it capable of predicting the thermal behavior of the and solar cookers under El-Arish prevailing weather conditions. The flat-plate, multi-step and open sun drying systems are tested simultaneously for drying some fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants that grown in the North Sinai area. from the obtained results, the drying air temperature in drying chambers were suitable for drying most of the agricultural products. Also, from statistical results, the two term and modified Henderson and Pabis models were considered the best models to represent the thin layer drying behavior of the investigated products.
