Abstract The Stoat `epilepsy’ derived from the Greek epilepsies -a taking hold of or seiziag- is understood as tendency to experience recurrent seizures of major or minor intensity and varying characteristics. (1) Epilepsy is as old as humankind About 3000 years ago in Mesopotamia (Now Iraq), a secondarily generalized convulsion was fully described in Acadian, the oldest written language. The seizure was attributed to the god of the moon. Cases of epilepsy were also described in Egypt. China and Babylonia 2000 years ago. (2) The first cautious step towards understanding epilepsy began around 2400 years ago with a book titled, On the sacred disease, which is attributed to Hippocrates (born 460 B C). He rejected the belief that individual Greek gods cause epilepsy and superstitions and magic that were used to prevent or cure epilepsy. Hippocrates believed that epilepsy was a brain disease caused by superfluity of phlegm that led to abnormal brain consistancy. Among the treatment he proposed were diet and drugs. C.)
