Abstract
Germ cell neoplasms have unique histological appearance and doubtful histogenesis. They are usually gonadal in origin, but can also occur in the mid-1 ine of retroperitoneum, anterior mediastinum, thymus and pineal areas. The purpose of such study is to study the histopathological patterns of different types of germ cell tumors.
This study consists of 70 specimens of germ cell tumors studied during the period January 1989 to June 1994.
The age of the studied patients ranged between 5 to 52 years with a mean value of 24.65±1 1.76 years. Among the 70 patients 35 (50%) were males, and 35 (50%) were females. with a male to female ratio of 1:1.
Of the 70 studied germ cell tumors, 34 cases (48.6%) had ovarian tumors, testicular tumors in 28 cases (40%). 3 cases (4.3%) had intracranial tumors, 3 cases (4.3%) had retroperitoneal, and the last 2 cases (2.9%) had their tumor in their mediastinum.
Testicular germ cell tumors included; I I cases (39.3%) with classic seminoma, 7 cases (25%) embryonal carcinoma, 3 cases (10.7%) mature teratoma, 2 cases (7.1%) anaplastic seminoma, 2 cases (7.1%) spermatocyte seminoma.
