Abstract Depression is a psychiatric episode, characterized by changes in affective states, ranging in severity from the normal mood fluctuations to sever melancholic psychotic episodes (Tadross, 1980). Clomipramine is one of the tricyclic antidepressants, that can be used for treatment of depression (Bowman and Rand, 1980). Norepinephrine [NE] and 5- hydroxytryptamine [5-HT] are neurotransmitters that may play an important role in depression (Bowman and Rand 1980). Mechanism of action of clomipramine is increasing available brain monoamines [NE and 5-HT) by interferance with their reuptake, (Hollister, 1992).Both social and individual problems may have a role •in misuse of drugs specialy opioid drugs (as codeine and dextropropoxyphene (DP)) and non opioid antitussive drug, dextromethorphan (DM). Misuse of these drugs mediates dependance, (Doh, 1991 and Walker, & Yatham, 1993). The depressant effects of opioids are enhanced by tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), (Onghena and Houdenhove, 1992).The aim of the present investigation is to show the effect of the previous drugs when used individually or in combined form. On neurotransmitters [(GABA, 5-HT, cAMP] level, serum glucose, serum transaminases and electrolytes levels. Our study was divided into 2 major parts. The first part investigated the effect of administration of drugs (CIM, DM, Codeine, DP) either individually or in combined form after 2 hrs of administration. The second part included the study of previous drugs effect after 30 days of dministration.Certain biochemical parameters are selected for the present study. They included brain neurotransmitters (GABA, 5-HT), c~, serum glucose level, serum transaminases (AST, ALT) and serum electrolytes level(Na+,K+, Ca2+, Mg3+). |
