Abstract

Our goals are:
1- To start nutrition and follow a nutritional protocol in our ICU (which was at the start at the time of preparing this research work).
2- To determine whether during the first week of early enteral support, adjuvant parenteral supplementation safe and can rapidly corrects nutritional parameters such as retinol-binding protein (RBP) and prealbumin.
3- Also to determine whether this combined type of nutrition prevents or limits the occurrence of multiple organ failure, reduces the need for ventilatory or circulatory support and if it shortens the length of stay in ICU or in the hospital, compared with exclusive enteral support in ICU.
Conclusions:
1- Supplemental parenteral feeding coupled with early enteral support is safe and effective in achieving optimal caloric intake earlier than the enteral feeding only.
2- Also it corrects some nutritional parameters such as retinol binding protein and prealbumin more early within one weak of treatment.
3- Furthermore the combination itself provides a protection for the patient until the intestinal function restored to receive the complete need of enteral feeding.
4- However, starting parenteral nutrition at the same time as central nutrition appears to have no added clinical benefit and is associated with higher costs than enteral nutrition alone.
