Abstract

- The present work was carried out to evaluate the single
dose effect of ivermectin in comparison to doramectin on semen characters and hormonal profile in mature male rats. Moreover, some haematological, biochemical and histopathological changes were also performed. Sixty mature albino male rats weighing from 150-200 g each were used in this study. The animals were divided into three equal groups each of 20 rats. The first group was injected S/C with a single dose of ivermectin (0.3 mg/kg b.wt.). The second group was injected S/C with a single dose of doramectin (0.3 mg/kg b.wt.). The third group was kept as a control and was injected S/C with 0.5 ml normal saline. Five rats from each group were killed after 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks post drug administration. The results are summarized as follows:
I. Effect of ivermectin or doramectin on internal organs weight of male rats:
• Testis: There was a significant decrease in testis weight after the 8” week in doramectin treated group as compared with the control group.
• Epididymis: After the 4th and 8l1 week of the experiment. The epididymis weight showed a significant decrease in ivermectin and doramectin treated group compared with the control group.
• Prostate gland: A significant decrease in prostate gland weight was observed after the 4th week of the experiment in ivermectin and doramectin treated group as compared with the control group. Moreover during the same period there was a significant
decrease in prostate gland weight in ivermectin treated group as compared with doramectin treated group. After the 8th week of the experiment, ivermectin and doramectin treated group revealed a significant decrease in prostate gland weight as compared with the control. However, there were significant changes in prostate gland weight of ivermectin or doramectin treated group after the 1st and 2nd weeks of the experiment.
Seminal vesicle: After the 1st week of the experiment, the seminal vesicle weight showed a significant increase in doramectin treated group as compared with the control and ivermectin treated group. After the 2’ and 8th weeks of the experiment, the seminal vesicle showed a significant decrease in ivermectin and doramectin treated group as compared with the control group. After the 4th week of the experiment, the ivermectin treated group induced a significant decrease in the seminal vesicle weight as compared with the control group. While the doramectin treated group showbd insignificant changes of the same period.
• Liver: The ivermectin and doramectin-treated groups showed insignificant changes in the liver weight allover the experimental periods.
• Kidney: The obtained data showed insignificant changes in the kidney weight allover the experimental periods.
• Spleen: There was a significant decrease in the spleen weight in ivermectin and doramectin treated groups after the 4th week as compared with the control group. While there were non-significant changes in spleen weight after other experimental periods.
