Abstract

The study aimed to asses the role of color Doppler ultrasonographyin the detection of prostate cancer using biopsy as the reference standard. The study included 50 patients with age range from 47-85 years presentedto Urology outpatient clinic of Zagazig University Hospitals from January2001 to January 2002. The patients had abnormal findings on digital rectalexamination (DRE), high PSA level and/or suspicious lesion by TRUS.The patients were assessed by color Doppler, targeted and systematicsixtant biopsy.
This study was performed to demonstrate the value ofultrasonography and color Doppler imaging in differentiating benign frommalignant lesions and help in selection of cases for biopsy. In order tofulfill this aim, the anatomy and the sonography of the normal prostategland have been reviewed.
The study has also demonstrated the appearance of normal prostatewhen examined by CDI. The different appearances of prostate cancer inTRUS and with addition of color coded imaging are explained.
The results was that TRUS able to detect malignancy in 17 cases outof 19 cases. This gives TRUS sensitivity 89% and able to excludemalignancy in 10 cases out of 31 cases gives TRUS specificity 32% whileCDI was able to detect malignancy in 16 cases out of 19 cases. This givesCDI sensitivity 84% and able to exclude malignancy in 27 cases out of 31cases gives CDI specificity 87%. So specificity was increased aftercombination of TRUS and CDI while sensitivity was decreased.
