Abstract

A solar distillation system made of two units is constructed and tested for distillation of saline water. The system is made of two newly designed identical solar distillers. This new solar distillers is called porous medium - multi step still. The basic idea in this design is to try to maximize the utilization of the incident solar radiation and minimizing the loss of such energy. In order to achieve that, the main principle of the new still developed in this work combines different features of different solar stills (basin type, wick type, ........... ) .The testing of the system is done on stages. The first stage was the study of the performance of a single units and the effects of different variables such as tilt angle, saline water flow rate, ... on the performance of the units at the different seasons of the year. The measure of performance is taken as the quantity of distilled water collected and efficiency of solar energy utilization in the vaporization of water. In the second stage the performance of two units connected in parallel is investigated and in the final experimental test of the system, the two units were connected in series. The results, over a period of two years, have shown that series connection gives better performance. The total productivity reached a maximum value of daily water productivity of 4. 711m2 with an efficiency of 53.2% during summer time for the two units connected in series.
‎Finally a previously developed solar distiller model was used to predict the performance of the multi-stage system. The predicted results were in excellent agreement with the experimental ones .
