Abstract

The effect of intramuscular administration of sodium fusidate at a dose level of 10 or 20 mg/kg body weight twice daily for seven consecutive days in adult male rabbits was investigated. The experiments were made to investigate the reproductive, haematological, biochemical and histopathological effects induced by sodium fusidate in mature male rabbits.
The Obtained Results Are as Follows:
I. REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS:
1. Semen characters:
a. Sperm motility. It was found that the intramuscular administration of sodium fusidate at a dose level of 20 mg/kg body weight twice daily for seven consecutive days induced a transient significant decrease in sperm motility.
b. Sperm count. Sodium fusidate 10 or 20 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly twice daily had no effect on sperm count.
c. Sperm abnormalities. It was found that the administration of sodium fusidate 10 or 20 mg/kg body weight twice daily for seven consecutive days produced insignificant changes in sperm abnormalities.
2. Index weight of the reproductive organs:
It was found that the administration of sodium fusidate 10 or 20 mg/kg body weight twice daily for seven consecutive days produced insignificant changes in the weight of tests, epididymis and prostate gland of the treated rabbits in comparison with the control group.
3. Histology of the reproductive organs:
a. Macroscopic rmdings. It was found that male rabbits treated with 10 or 20 mg/kg body weight of sodium fusidate showed no gross lesions.
b. Microscopic findings.
1. Testes. A dose of 20 mg/kg body weight of sodium fusidate given intramuscularly twice daily for seven days produced mild reversible testicular degeneration which occurred during the early stage of the experiment .
