Objective: To assess the infection control measures practiced by nurses in the labour and delivery unit. Design: descriptive study.Setting: The study was conducted in two settings in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Benha University Hospital and Benha Teaching Hospital. Sample: - convenient sample included all available nurses (33) in the labour and delivery unit, 17 of them worked at Benha university hospital, and 16 of nurses worked at Benha teaching hospital. The researcher takes two nurses in every shift and each nurse was observed once during every shift and finally each procedure was observed three times during the period from the beginning of January to the end of the June (2006). Tools of data collection:-the data were collected by questionnaire sheet and observational checklist. Results: the majority (78.8%) of nurses has incorrect practice regarding infection control measures at two hospitals with insignificant difference between two hospitals and more than half (60.6%) of nurses has correct knowledge about infection control measures.Conclusion and recommendations: the nurse’s practice of infection control is poor and there is negative correlation between nurses’ knowledge and their practice. The study recommended well planned training program for the staff to improve their knowledge and practice, provide nurses with Arabic books about infection control measures and the standards of infection control measures must be available and all nurses must be aware about them and stick to them in their practices.
