Abstract Nigella sativa seeds and its oil are widely used by common people against many diseases. The present study was done to explore the possible effects of different forms of Nigella sativa L. forms on the body weight gain, fertility, immunity, the blood picture and to determine the side effects, if present, on the liver and kidney functions. One hundred and fifty, 2 months old male balady chickens were divided randomly into 10 equal groups. The first 3 groups were given crushed Nigella sativa seeds at levels of 0.5, 1 and 2 % of the ration, for groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Nigella sativa oil was given at rates of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 % of the ration for groups 4, 5 and 6 respectively. Defatted meal (cake) was given at levels of 2: 4 and 8 % of the ration for groups 7, 8 and 9 respectively. The last group (10) served as a control group. The results can be summarized as follows: Body weight: - The present findings demonstrated that there was a significant increase in the body weight and the average daily body weight gain of the birds fed on 1 and 2% of crushed Nigella sativa seeds in the ration; 0.25, 0.5 and 1 % Nigella sativa oil and those receiving 8% as cake. There was a significant reduction in the feed conversion in the birds receiving 1 % Mgella sativa seeds and 1 % oil of Nigella sativa, while, a significant increase was observed in the birds receiving ration containing 4% Nigella sativa cake. Organs weight: 1. No significant changes were observed in the heart weight due to feeding of different forms and different levels of Nigella sativa L. all over the experimental period. 2. No significant changes were observed in the liver weight due to different forms and different levels throughout the experimental period. 3. A significant increase in the testicular weight in the birds receiving 1 % Nigella sativa oil after 4 months. 4. A significant increase in the spleen weight was observed in birds receiving 0.25, 0.5 and 1 % Nigella sativa oil. 5. A significant increase in the bursal weight was noticed in the birds fed on ration containing 1 % oil of Nigella sativa after 3 and 4 months from the beginning of the experiment. 6. A significant increase in the pancreas weight was observed in the birds receiving 2% Nigella sativa seeds and 2, 4 and 8% Nigella sativa cake after 2 months. A significant increase in the pancreas weight was also evidenced in the birds receiving 2 % Nigella sativa seeds in the ration after 4 months. |
