Abstract In mobile computing environments, keeping materialized views of frequently accessed data at mobile units is critical for reducing contention on the narrow bandwidth channels. Using traditional view maintenance techniques in these environments is likely to be sevcrely hampered by the disconnection and mobility o!” clients. This thesis adapts view maintenance techniques of data warehouses to suit the mobile environments. A view maintenance scheme that uses mobile agents in maintaining views materialized at the mobile units is proposed. Mobile agents directly address the problems o!” low bandwidth and partial connection of mobile units to the network. The thesis also suggests using weak consistency models to reduce the communication cost and to suit the MUs limited resources. The performance of the proposed view maintenance scheme is analyzed through a simulation study. |
