Glutamine is an extremely valuable medicinal.,was commonly given to paieints in hospitals in Europe,America andAsia for stimulate muscle protein synthesis ,increase growth hormones,decrease muscle catabolism during exercise and to decrease the chances of illness/infection by boosting immune system,
Diabetic and starvation have an abnormal glutamine metabolism. Much higher percentage of their glutamine is broken down for the production of glucose by the liver and the kidneys, a process called glutamine gluconeogenesis. This increased production of glucose from glutamine (and also from alanine, an amino acid in the same family) is probably related to the pancreatic hormone called glucagon.
Our results showed that in absence or lack of insulin action, there was increase in glutaminase activity, and the high level of glucose have no effect on glutamine metabolism. Also starvation condition improve the above relation, i.e., glutaminase activity increased in absence or lack of insulin action.
