Abstract
Twenty seven β-thalassemia major adolescent female patients were included in this study.
Inclusion criteria:
- Female patients≥ 13.5 years and in Tanner stage 1.
- Female patients≥ 16 years with no menarche and patients with secondary amenorrhea.
- Female patients with arrested puberty, i.e. in the same Tanner stage for more than 1 year
Exclusion criteria:
- Age <13.5 years
- Hepatic or cardiac decompensation
- Associated anemia due to a different etiology
- Severe malnutrition, diabetes, dysmorphic traits
Patients included in the study had mean age of 17.9±0.8 years (13.5-25.5 years). The mean height SDS was -1.7±0.3. The mean sitting height SDS was -3±1, the mean weight SDS was -1.9 ±0.3 and the mean BMI was within normal -0.5 ±0.6, the span SDS was -2.7 ±0.3.
