Abstract

Mesenteric ischaemia results from decreased blood flow to the bowel, causing cellular injury from lack of oxygen and nutrients. (Kozuch and Brandt, 2005)
Mesenteric ischemia in chronic and acute forms carries a high morbidity and mortality rate, each increased by frequent delays in diagnosis.
(Herbert and Steele, 2007)
Mesenteric vascular occlusion (MVO) produces a spectrum of clinical presentations, the most common of which is the acute onset of abdominal pain disproportionate to the physical findings. MVT occurs in a younger age group, and if diagnosed early, it may be successfully managed conservatively with antico- agulation therapy. Mesenteric arterial occlusion (MAO) occurs in a relatively older age group than mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT), and usually requires surgery. Occasionally both arterial and venous mesenteric occlusion may be found simultaneously. (Hefny et al., 2008)
Acute mesenteric ischemia is a challenging clinical problem with diverse causes, which often results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. A strong clinical suspicion and an aggressive approach should be adopted in dealing with this condition because the outcome crucially depends on rapid diagnosis and treatment.
