Abstract

Structural steel members are easy to fabricate and erect which reduces the cost. These members are widely used in many fields because of their relatively low weight and cross sections variety. This thesis studies the behavior of monosymmetric and unsymmetric compression members under axial loads (T-sections and single angles). T-sections for example represent upper and bottom chords of the truss where these members are mostly subjected to axial loads that may or may not act at centroid. Regarding single angles, they are often subjected to axial loads as truss members. That necessitates a through study of the behavior of these members under axial loads, where buckling is by three modes: flexural buckling, torsional buckling, and flexural torsional buckling. Buckling modes depend upon cross section, loading position, end conditions and slenderness ratio.
For this purpose, the finite element computer package COSMOS/M Ver.2.6 is adopted to investigate the axial capacity. Both geometric and material nonlinearities are considered. A verification of the finite element model is carried out showing good agreement between the results of the finite element models and those of the theoretical analysis ]1, 7[. Also single angle finite element model results are in good agreement with the experimental results] 11[.
