Abstract
This study was conducted to study the effect of Hassab’s devascularization operation on portal hypertensive gastropathy. The study included 20 patients with Bilharzial hepatic fibrosis, histopathologically documented (13male and 7 female) with a mean age of 42 ± 5.2 years. All patients had previous history of upper gastro-intestinal bleeding but without history of sclerotherapy. Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy was done preoperative and 3 - 6 months post-operative for grading of portal hypertensive gastropathy. Also punch biopsies from the gastric body and antrum were taken for both histopathological and histochemical assessment of the degree of portal hypertensive gastropathy according to Gilliam’s score.
Pre-operative endoscopic assessment revealed that 13 patients (65%) had mild portal hypertensive gastropathy and 7 (35%) had severe gastropathy. Histopathological examination showed that all patients had vascular ectasia while 90% had fibrin thrombi. There was insignificant
