Abstract

Physiology of Sleep
s ••tokit. of a’ cyclical phenbinerion. The sleep/wake •
rhythm in adult is part of a 24 hour or eireadian cycle controlled by en endogenous pacemaker that is active even in an isolated, time-cue free environment.
It is the loss of the waking state with diminished cerebral activity due to inhibition of the pontine reticular activating system. Sleep influences every physiological process, and it has been shown that each sleep stage has not only a unique physiology but a specific pathology as well(’).
Wakefulness, rapid eye movements (REM) sleep, and non- .. rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep are conventionally defined by brain-wave pattern, muscle tone, and possible oculomotor activity and it s type.
Non-rapid eye movement (or quiet sleep) include four stages:- Stage one: it occupies only 2-5% of total night time sleep. Sleep is easily discontinued during this stage, there may be slow rolling eye • movements but no rapid eye movements.
