Abstract

The present contrastive genre analysis study has investigated the rhetorical structure and rhetorical features of sociology research article introduction written by Anglo-American scholars, non-native English scholars native Arabic scholars. The study provides observations about the position, label, and average length of introductions to sociology research articles in addition to the analytical framework which includes move structure analysis, rhetorical frames, metadiscourse, and the use of first-person pronouns.
The study shows that the introductory section is the first in the introduction-method-results-discussion (IMRD) structure of sociology RAs. It is placed after the main title in non-native English and native Arabic articles and after the abstract in Anglo-American ones. This section is either labeled or unlabelled. Its average length exceeds those of hard science research articles. Most of these observations are similar to those of other studies’ results concerned with English RA introductions in the field of sociology and/or social sciences in general.
