Abstract

The solution of the one-dimensional transport equation has been of great interest in chemical engineering due to its wide application in reactor design and analysis and also in water quality modeling for one-dimensional rivers.
Many solutions have been presented for that equation and for spec¬ific applications of the transport equation.
Some of these solutions are numerical and others are analytical. Finite difference algorithms normally employed to solve this equation significantly distort steep concentration gradients and the numerical ”dispersion” effect completely masks the real physical turbulent dif¬fusion. The analytical solutions for this equation have often been given in the form of infinite series which are not of practical use in modeling.
So it is the subject of this work to present an exact analytical solution to the mass transport equation for specific applications with or without diffusion and reaction. Thus, this work is mainly consisting of the following three chapters:
Chapter III: Axial Tracer Concentration Profiles in Tubular Reac¬tors. This includes the solution of the one dimensional transport equa¬tion with convection, dispersion and chemical reaction for tubular reac¬tors. The solution obtained is compared to the already existing solu¬tions in chemical engineering textbooks to test this model.
Chapter IV: The Analytic Solution to the Dynamic, One Dimensional Model with Axial Dispersion and Chemical Reaction.
