Abstract

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt. It appears to be encircled with a belt of aquatic environment, subjected to multiple pollutants. Several industrial plants are located to the east and west of Alexandria. There is significant elevation of heavy metals concentrations in different components of the ecosystem.
High discharge rate of different wastes from industrial sources to Mahmoudia canal (fresh water), Maryout Lake fbrackish water) and drains dispose their water ultimately into the Western Harbour of Alexandria. The wastes are mostly irived from many industries extending along the coast of >udia canal. Also from several industries concentrated at eastern sector of Alexandria city, discharge their wastes Maryout Lake. Drain water with its content of metals different sources such as agricultural, industrial and ige wastes become serious sources of pollutants with high jntration of some heavy metals as mercury.
Mercury (Hg), as a pollutant in the aquatic environment attracted the public opinion since the early 1950’s due its fatal effects and the epoch of Minamata disease in in (D’ltri et aj_) ^ 1 ’ . The major effects of mercury ling take the form of neurological and renal disturbance are primarily associated with organic and inorganic compounds.
