Abstract

The effectiveness of the planning and management system was proven to be, in the majority of the cases; the most significant factor for improving the productivity and the operational characteristics of the manufacturing industries. Consonant with this approach, integration of the different functions within the manufacturing system is considered, nowadays, the keystone of’ founding an, affluent overall manufacturing performance. Although numerous integration schemes have’ been developed, process planning and manufacturing resource planning are traditionally considered two distinct planning activities. The aim of the research reported here is to develop an integrated process and resource planning system, which considers the interdependencies between both planning functions. To achieve Such goal, a thorough analysis of the planning problem, covering problems related to both process planning and MRPII, is performed. The interdependencies between both functions are precisely defined and the mutual overlapped area is highlighted. In order to effectively handle their interdependencies, the overlapped area is used to integrate process . planning and MRPII. For which purpose, a reformulation of both functions is presented to adapt them for integration. Beside changing’ the execution procedure of the tasks within the reformulated functions, ,the unnecessarily repeated tasks has been omitted and other tasks has been restructured to cover expanded domains. The proposed integrated system is presented, and its hierarchy is described. The architecture of the system is illustrated then detailed by devising the functionality of the different system organs and defining the relationships among them. Among the different system modules, the resource, selection module propelled by an analytical model is considered the cornerstone of the system. The developed analytical model comprises two stages eventually aiming to selecting an appropriate process plan among candidates. The selection criterion is the plan total incurred cost. New cost parameters, such as lead time virtual cost, are originated. Other parameters, such as workstation utilization cost, WIP inventory cost and lateness cost are congenially maneuvered and reshaped, according to the author’s insight to the overall system functionality, and mathematically .expressed to fit the suggested model formulation.
