Abstract The flammability of polyesters is one of the challenging problems in the polyester Industry. Egyptian polyester/cotton blend 87«5:12.5% w«s treated tlpy a number of phosphate and sulphate salts,as flame retnr-ints, and al3o,by«ome halogenated organic compounds e.g erechlor (a chlorinated c2o~Co8 n-alkane) and DecaBromo-iBiphenyl Oxide (DBBO). Various combinations of- phosphorus-bromine and sulpher->nine systems have been tried. The material was investigated by measuring its Limiting Index (LOI) and following its thermal behaviour using k«rmal analysis techniques • It was found that ammonium phosphate and ammonium Lphate exert the best effect on the flammability of the Lend specially when used in conjunction with DBBO • LOI of untreated blend is 16.1, this value increased 22.1 by treating the blend with 10 weight^ ammonium phos-te. Also, LOI of sample treate’d with 10 weight^ ammon — sulphate is only 18.7,. Furthermore, LOI value of the id when treated with 10.9 weight % DBBO is 22.2. |
