Abstract

Bipolar scissors is one of the new surgical instruments which has been recently used in tonsillectomy and has received a considerable research interest. Review of literature revealed different techniques for tonsillectomy which have been studies thoroughly, but convincing evidence in literature is still lacking as far as the optimal method of performing this surgical procedure. In this work, one hundred patients with recurrent attacks of tonsillitis, and were indicated for tonsillectomy, were divided into two equal groups. The first group underwent bipolar scissors tonsillectomy, and the second one underwent the cold dissection technique. According to our statistical analysis and data, bipolar scissors technique proved to be much better than the cold dissection tonsillectomy regarding the easiness of use, reduced intraoperative blood loss, and operative time which indirectly impacts the cost-effectiveness of this procedure. The mean intraoperative blood loss was 35.5 ml with the bipolar scissors, while with the cold dissection technique it was 84 ml. Also, it has been found that the mean operative time was 13.96 with the bipolar scissors, and it was 20.7 with the cold dissection group.
