Abstract

the thesis, we will discuss the beamforming operation in the case of both uncorrelated and coherent narrow-band signals. First, we explain the classical beamforming methods that depend on complete knowledge of the antenna array response and directions of arrival. We wiJJ discuss the most important DOAs estimation techniques and the effect of their performance on the beamforming operation. We will see also the failure in both the DOA estimation and beamforming in the case of coherent signals and the reasons for that. Also we will explain the spatial smoothing method with its two kinds forward and forward/backward, which provide a partial solution for coherent signals in the case of uniform linear array.
‎A recent method called the blind beamforming technique wiJJ be explained. By mean of this technique the steering vectors of all the arrived signals are estimated using higher order statistics on the received signal by the antenna array. These estimated steering vectors are directly used in beamforming with no need for DOAs estimation or even any knowledge about the antenna array. Also we will explain how this method can detect coherent signals that the classical beamformer fails to detect them. We will study the performance of this method and compare it with that of the classical beamforming to recognize its degree of importance and effectiveness.
