Abstract

High speed marine craft has a peculiar form of lmll geometry. The characteristics of high speed hull fonn, features, and geometry are discussed for three spe! d regimes. Determination of suitable hull configurations due to its speed regime is illustrated through out different design forms of high speed hull shape. Data on different high speed series are collected, discussed, and repn:sented in a new profile to provide the designers with suitable series which offer best performance. The elemental hydrodynamic characteristics of high speed craft are discussed and empirical equations are given which can be applied to determine the wetted area, hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on high speed vessels. Different performance prediction methods, previously developed, are applied and discussed for calm and rough waters. Special computer program and flow •hart have been developed and constructed based on different existing performance prediction methods In order to improve the performance of high speed craft, optimum trim angles have been discussed for general designs and determined for Series 62 as a new de\clopment in this work. Newly proposed methods have been developed of shift of weight and wind spoiler. The!e methods have been considered in this thesis as controlling trim devices for achieving optimum trim angles continuously at different speed ranges. In addition hydrodynamic equilibrium equations of high speed marine craft have been modified for transom flap method Special computer programs have been developed und constructed at three phases of study for three different cases of hull performance. The first case is the p1 ediction of the performance at equilibrium condition. The second case is the controlling of hull trim angle and predicts the performance at any arbitrary trim angle. The third case is the determination of the optimum trim ; mgle at best possible performance oc:curs Semi-empirical method for evaluation of all the ccefficients of linear sway, roll, and yaw equations has been presented. These coefficienls are employed in a developed computer program. This program is created specially to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of high speed planing hull The work terminates with a case study on the hydrodynamic design of a high speed marine craft operating in semi-planing regime. Hydrodynamic design steps have been performed for boat dimensions, speed, load condition and hull geometry. In addition, the hydrodynamic performance and evaluation of dynamic parameters of newly generated boat design have been determined.
