Abstract

The present study was conducted for evaluation of distraction osteogenesis effect on soft tissues integrity. Eight male dogs with an average age of 1.5 years and an average weight of 20 kg were included in this study.
The surgery was performed under strict aseptic conditions. The periosteum was elevated carefully in order to preserve it intact. At the planned osteotomy side distal to the last mandibular molar, bone cut was initiated using surgical bur. With the medial cortex still intact and the bone incompletely separated, the pin holes were drilled with a suitable driller. Chisels and mallet were used at the planned osteotomy site to complete the bone cut. Small skin holes were made corresponding to the predrilled pin holes. The pins were passed through the skin holes then screwed through the drilled holes till they engage the medial cortex. Chisels were used to complete the bone segments separation from the medial side. The distractor was fitted back on the pins.
